Drain Root Removal in Cape Town: How Root Extraction Works

Jun 23, 2026 | News

Drain root removal, also called root extraction, is the process of clearing tree roots that have grown into and blocked underground pipes. Roots are drawn to the moisture and nutrients inside drains, and once they find a crack or loose joint they keep growing, catching debris until they cause a full blockage, sewage backups and even flooding. Removing them quickly, and the right way, protects your pipes from lasting damage.

How drain root removal works

The first step is to locate the intrusion. A CCTV drain camera is fed into the pipe to pinpoint exactly where the roots have entered and how bad the blockage is. Once we can see the problem, we cut the roots out with a mechanical root-cutting machine, a specialised tool with a rotating cutting head that shears the roots away from the pipe wall so they can be flushed out.

With the roots cut, the pipe is cleared and cleaned using a high-pressure water jet. The jetter scours the inside of the pipe, flushing out the cut roots and any debris they trapped, and leaves a clean bore that is far less likely to block again soon. A final camera pass confirms the line is clear and flowing.

When excavation is needed

Cutting and jetting solves most cases, but where roots have grown through a badly cracked joint or a collapsed section, the pipe itself needs repair. That means excavating down to the damaged length so it can be replaced or relined and the entry point sealed. Excavation is more invasive and is best left to professionals, but it is sometimes the only way to stop roots returning through the same gap.

Why roots keep coming back

It is important to understand that cutting roots is a temporary fix. As long as the tree is alive and the pipe has an opening, the roots will regrow and the blockage will return, often within a year or two. A lasting solution means dealing with the source: repairing or relining the damaged pipe, and in some cases removing or relocating the offending tree, or treating the roots with a root-inhibiting product. Our guide to how tree roots affect your pipes explains the long-term options, and you can learn to read the early signs of tree root invasion in your plumbing before the damage is done.

Drain root removal in Cape Town

Recurring blockages, gurgling drains and slow-draining toilets in older Cape Town properties with established trees are classic signs of root intrusion. Because roots cause real structural damage the longer they are left, fast professional drain root removal is the safest option. Our drain clearing services in Cape Town combine CCTV inspection, mechanical root cutting and high-pressure jetting to clear the line and show you exactly what caused the problem, so it can be fixed for good rather than cleared again and again.
