Servicing on a set interval is what keeps a septic system out of trouble. Tanks that are inspected regularly rarely fail without warning, and problems get caught while they are still cheap to fix. We also disinfect where required to control odours and infestations.

What a Septic Tank Service Includes

A septic tank works by separating solids and scum from clear wastewater. Bacteria in the tank break down solid waste into a sludge that settles on the bottom, while fats, oils and grease float to the surface as a scum layer. The relatively clear liquid in between drains out to a soakaway, French drain field or treatment system. Servicing exists to keep those three layers in balance, because once sludge or scum reaches the outlet, solids escape into the drain field and start blocking it.

A standard service visit from Drain Blasters covers:

• Locating and opening the tank, and a visual inspection of the structure for cracks or root intrusion
• Measuring the sludge and scum depths against the tank’s capacity to determine whether desludging is due
• Desludging with a vacuum truck where the levels require it
• Checking the inlet and outlet baffles or tees, which are the components that most often fail unnoticed
• Assessing the soakaway or drain field for ponding, surcharging or odour
• Removal and disposal of all waste at a registered facility, with a safe disposal certificate

Servicing vs Pumping: Which Do You Actually Need?

These are different jobs. Pumping is the pump out on its own, which is the right call when a tank is simply full and you know the system is otherwise sound. Servicing is the scheduled maintenance visit described here: the tank gets emptied if it needs it, but the point of the visit is the inspection and the condition report. If your tank has been emptied several times in recent years without anyone looking at why it keeps filling, a service is what you want rather than another pump out.

How Often Should a Septic Tank Be Serviced?

Service intervals depend on tank capacity, the number of people the system serves and what goes into it. A useful starting point for a domestic property is an inspection every year and desludging every 2 to 3 years. Commercial premises, particularly restaurants and guesthouses, generally need a shorter cycle because of the volume and the grease load. Properties on heavy clay, or with an older soakaway, benefit from more frequent checks because the drain field has less margin.

Book a service sooner if you notice slow drains across the property, gurgling from toilets, sewage odour near the tank or drain field, standing water or unusually green grass over the soakaway, or if the tank has not been inspected in over two years.
