A CCTV drain inspection puts a camera inside the pipe so you can see the fault instead of paying someone to guess at it. In Cape Town that matters more than most places, because a great deal of the city’s housing stock still drains through clay pipework laid decades ago. What a CCTV drain inspection covers
A survey is not just a camera pushed down a pipe. A proper job covers the full run between access points and produces something you can act on:
- The full drain run, from the access chamber to the connection point, rather than the first few metres.
- The location and depth of each fault, so a repair can be dug in one place instead of exploratory trenching across a garden or car park.
- The condition of the pipe itself: collapsed or deformed sections, cracks, displaced joints and bellies holding standing water.
- What is causing the blockage: tree root intrusion, hardened fat and grease, scale, or foreign objects.
- Footage and a written summary you can hand to an insurer, a body corporate, a buyer or a municipal inspector.
When Cape Town property owners book an inspection
Four situations account for most of the surveys we run:
Before transfer on a property purchase
Drainage is underground and therefore invisible on a normal viewing. A survey before transfer is far cheaper than discovering a collapsed connection after you have taken occupation, particularly on older Southern Suburbs and City Bowl housing stock where clay pipework is still common.
When a blockage keeps coming back
A drain that blocks every few months is not a cleaning problem, it is a structural one. Repeated drain clearing on the same run treats the symptom. A camera finds the root, the fracture or the belly that keeps catching debris, and tells you whether the answer is high-pressure cleaning or an excavation.
Before and after drainage work
A survey beforehand scopes the job accurately so a quote reflects the actual work. A survey afterwards confirms the line is clear and the repair holds, which matters when you are signing off a contractor’s invoice.
When there is a smell you cannot trace
Persistent sewage odour usually means escaping gas: a dry trap, a broken vent, or a cracked pipe under a slab. A camera identifies which, rather than leaving you to redecorate around the problem.
CCTV drain inspections for businesses and commercial property
For a restaurant, guesthouse, shopping centre or factory, a drainage failure is not an inconvenience, it is closed doors and lost trade. Commercial surveys carry a few concerns residential ones do not:
- Continuity of trading. A scheduled inspection during quiet hours is considerably cheaper than an emergency shutdown mid-service.

- Lease and handover disputes. Dated footage establishes the condition of the drainage at the start or end of a lease, which settles arguments about who pays for what.
- Pest control. Broken drains are a standing invitation to rats. Finding the breach is more effective than baiting around it.
What drives the cost of a CCTV drain inspection
Any firm quoting a single flat figure sight-unseen is guessing, because the work varies. We quote per site, and these are the factors that move the number:
- Length and number of runs. One kitchen line is a short job. A full survey of every run on a commercial site is not.
- Access. Where there is a usable inspection chamber, the camera goes straight in. Where access has been paved or built over, gaining entry takes time.
- Whether the line must be cleared first. A camera cannot see through standing sewage or a solid fat plug, so a heavily blocked drain may need jetting before it can be surveyed.
- Reporting. A verbal finding on the day costs less than a written report with footage prepared for an insurer or a conveyancer.
- Location and timing. Travel beyond the metro, and after-hours or weekend work to avoid disrupting trade, both carry a premium.
