Searching for a root killer for drains usually means one thing: your drain is running slow, you suspect tree roots, and you want the cheapest fix that works. Chemical root killers do have a place, but they are a maintenance tool rather than a cure — and used in the wrong situation they will cost you money without solving anything. This guide explains what actually works on tree roots in drain pipes, when a chemical treatment is sensible, and when the only honest answer is to cut the roots out and repair the line.
Why tree roots get into drain pipes
Roots are not hunting for your pipe. They are following moisture and nutrients, and a sewer line leaking even slightly into surrounding soil is the richest target in the garden. Where they get in is almost always a defect that already existed: an open joint, a hairline crack, a perished rubber seal, or a shifted section of pipe.
Once a fine root hair passes through that opening it thickens inside the pipe, where there is no soil pressure to restrain it. It forms a fibrous mat that catches fat, paper and grit, and the blockage builds from there. Older clay and fibre-cement drains are the usual victims because their joints are more numerous and less forgiving than modern PVC.

Signs you have roots in your drains
- Gradually slowing drains rather than a sudden stoppage. Root blockages build over months.
- Gurgling from a toilet or gully when another fixture drains.
- Recurring blockages in the same line, clearing briefly after each rodding.
- Foul odour around a gully or inspection eye, caused by waste standing behind the obstruction.
- A lush green patch or soft, sinking ground following the line of the drain, which points to a leak feeding the soil.

Does root killer for drains actually work?
Yes, within limits. A root killer kills the root tissue growing inside the pipe so that it dies back and decomposes, or is flushed away. What it does not do is remove an established root mass, repair the defect that let the root in, or restore a collapsed pipe. Treat it as a way of slowing regrowth after the line has been cleared mechanically, not as a substitute for clearing it.
Copper sulphate crystals
The traditional option. Copper sulphate is flushed down a toilet or poured into an inspection eye, and kills root tissue it contacts directly. It is cheap and widely available. The drawbacks are real, though: it only affects roots it physically touches, so it does little against a mat sitting above the waterline, and it is toxic to the bacteria a septic tank depends on. If you are on a septic system, do not put copper sulphate down the drain.
Foaming root killers
Foaming products expand to fill the pipe, so they reach the crown of the drain where root mats usually hang, and they coat a much larger surface than crystals. They are more effective for that reason and generally more expensive. Formulations and registration differ between countries, so read the label and check that the product is approved for sewer use locally before buying.
Cautions
Never mix root killers with other drain chemicals, and be sceptical of using caustic drain cleaners on a root problem — they are formulated for fat and hair, and will not shift timber-like root material. Mechanical root cutting
For an established root mass, mechanical removal is the practical answer. A drain machine drives a flexible cable fitted with a cutting head through the line, and the rotating blade cuts the roots back to the pipe wall. It is fast and it restores flow the same day.
The limitation is that a cutter follows the path of least resistance and leaves the root stubs at the entry point. On a badly cracked pipe an aggressive cutting head can also worsen the damage. This is why cutting is best paired with a camera inspection rather than done blind.
High pressure jetting
Jetting uses water at high pressure through a specialised nozzle to scour the pipe wall. Root-cutting nozzles combine that with a rotating action that strips the root mat and flushes the debris downstream, leaving a genuinely clean pipe rather than a bored-out channel through the blockage.
For most root intrusions this gives the longest interval before regrowth, because it removes the fine material a cable cutter leaves behind. Find the entry point with a camera
Clearing a root blockage without inspecting the line afterwards is guesswork. A CCTV survey run through the cleared drain shows where the roots entered, how much pipe is affected, and whether the surrounding section is sound or failing. That single piece of information decides whether you are looking at a routine maintenance cycle or a repair.

Permanent repair options
If the same section keeps re-rooting, the defect needs closing. Drain relining installs a resin liner that cures inside the existing pipe and seals the joints and cracks, removing the entry point without excavation. Where a pipe has collapsed or deformed badly, excavation and replacement of that section is the only option.
Neither is cheap, but both are one-time costs. Weigh them against repeated call-outs: a drain cleared twice a year indefinitely usually overtakes the cost of a lining repair within a few years.
Prevention: plant with the drain in mind
Species with aggressive, water-seeking roots cause most of the trouble. Willows, poplars, oaks, figs, and several eucalyptus and ficus species are common offenders in South African gardens, and are best kept well away from a drain run. Bamboo is worth singling out — running varieties will travel a long way and are difficult to remove once established.
If a mature tree is already close to the line, you are not obliged to remove it. Knowing where the drain runs, scheduling a periodic clean and keeping the pipe in good repair is usually enough to keep the two coexisting.
What to do next
If the drain is blocked now, clear it mechanically or by jetting first — chemicals will not open a blocked line. Once flow is restored, get the pipe inspected so you know whether you are managing a defect or repairing one. A root killer then has a sensible role in stretching the interval between cleans.
