Most blocked drains do not need a blocked drain plumber. A basin that drains slowly, a shower gully holding water, a kitchen sink backing up after a roast: those are usually within reach of a plunger, a drain snake and twenty minutes. The question worth answering is not whether you can clear a blockage yourself, but when attempting to is going to cost you more than calling someone.

Blockages you can usually clear yourself
If the problem is confined to one fixture and the rest of the property drains normally, the obstruction is almost certainly in that fixture’s trap or the short run of pipe behind it.
- A single slow basin or bath. Hair and soap scum in the trap. Remove and clean the trap, or use a hand auger.
- A kitchen sink that drains slowly after cooking. Congealed fat coating the pipe wall. Very hot water and a plunger, repeated, will usually restore it.
- A gurgling but functional toilet. Often a partial vent restriction rather than a blockage.
- A shower gully backing up gradually. Lift the grate and clear the hair mat underneath, which is the cause more often than not.

When to stop and call a blocked drain plumber
These signs indicate the problem is in the main line, not the fixture, and no amount of plunging will reach it.

The multiple fixture test is the most reliable one available to a homeowner. One fixture is a local problem. Two or more, particularly on different floors or different sides of the property, is a shared line problem, and shared lines are not accessible from inside the house.
Why chemical drain cleaners often make things worse
Caustic and acid drain cleaners are the default reach for a stubborn blockage and they are frequently the wrong tool.
They work by dissolving organic matter, which means they work on hair and light grease and do essentially nothing to tree roots, wet wipes, sand, builder’s rubble or a collapsed section of pipe. On a fully blocked line the product does not reach the obstruction at all. It sits in the standing water above it, where it stays hot, concentrated and hazardous, and it is still there when a technician opens the pipe.
Repeated use also damages the system it is meant to protect. Caustic products attack older galvanised and cast iron pipework, degrade rubber seals at joints, and on properties running to a septic tank they kill the bacterial activity the tank depends on. If you have already poured product down the line, say so when you call. It changes how the technician approaches the job and it is a safety matter, not an admission of anything.
What a professional does differently
Diagnosis before clearing
A technician establishes where the blockage is before deciding how to remove it, working from manhole inspection and the pattern of affected fixtures. Clearing a line without knowing why it blocked produces a repeat call out.
Access to the main line
Household tools reach a few metres. Professional equipment works from the inspection chamber along the full run to the connection, which is where main line blockages actually sit.
High pressure water jetting
Jetting cuts through grease, scale and root matter and scours the pipe wall back to its full bore, rather than punching a hole through the obstruction and leaving the rest in place. Camera inspection
Where blockages recur, a CCTV drain survey identifies the cause: root ingress at a joint, a sag holding water, a partial collapse, or a foreign object. This matters commercially as well as technically, because a recurring blockage caused by a structural defect is a repair, and repairs need evidence.
Root removal
Tree roots enter through joints and hairline cracks, seeking moisture, and they regrow. Mechanical cutting followed by jetting removes the mass, and the survey establishes whether the entry point needs repair. What causes main line blockages
- Fats, oils and grease. Poured warm, set hard, and accumulate into a deposit that narrows the bore until anything solid catches on it.
- Wet wipes and sanitary products. Do not break down in water regardless of what the packaging claims, and bind readily with existing grease.
- Tree roots. The most common cause of recurring blockages on established properties.
- Sand and building rubble. Frequent after renovations, and unusually resistant to anything other than jetting.
- Pipe defects. Sags, offset joints and partial collapses that catch debris at the same point every time.
- Foreign objects. Toys, cloths and cleaning equipment, and more of them than most people expect.

What it costs, and what makes it cost more
Pricing depends on access, the clearing method required and whether a camera survey is needed. The variables that push a job up are consistent: no accessible inspection chamber, a blockage that turns out to be structural, work outside normal hours, and prior chemical use that has to be handled before anything else can start. The economics of waiting are straightforward. A blocked main line does not stabilise. It backs up to the lowest opening on the property, which is commonly a ground floor shower or an outside gully, and the cost then includes cleaning up what came out of it. Sewage on a floor is a different category of problem from a slow drain.
Preventing the next one
- Scrape and dry wipe pans before washing. Fat belongs in the bin, not the sink.
- Fit strainers on kitchen and shower outlets, and empty them.
- Flush only the three things designed for it. Wipes are not one of them.
- Run hot water through kitchen waste after washing up to move residual grease along while it is still mobile.
- Know where your inspection chamber is before you need it.
- Where tree roots have been a problem, schedule preventative jetting rather than waiting for the next backup.

Frequently asked questions
How do I know if the blockage is mine or the municipality’s?
Broadly, the line from your property to the connection point is yours and the sewer beyond it is the City’s. If your inspection chamber is full and the one downstream is not, the problem is on your side.
Will a drain snake from the hardware store work?
For a basin, bath or shower trap, often yes. For a main line blockage, no. The reach is insufficient and it cannot remove root mass or scour the pipe wall.
Is jetting safe on older pipes?
Pressure is matched to the pipe material and condition, which is one reason diagnosis comes first. A camera survey establishes what the line can take before jetting where the age is uncertain.
My drain keeps blocking every few months. Why?
Recurring blockage at a consistent interval points to a structural cause, usually root ingress or a sag. Clearing alone will not change the interval. A survey will identify the defect.
Can a blocked drain damage the property?
